The San Antonio Spurs feel more vulnerable than they have been in quite some time.
Tony Parker and Rudy Gay are working their way back from significant injuries, while Pau Gasol and Manu Ginobili re-signed to get a chance to continue their battles from Father Time in exactly the same uniforms.
Together with LaMarcus Aldridge moving further away from stardom, Kawhi Leonard is the lone participant who enjoys authentic celestial standing, and he doesn’t actually have the luxury of an excessive amount of depth around him.
Sure, Dejounte Murray, Leonard, Danny Green, Aldridge and Gasol’s Possible opening quintet is a person. Nevertheless, the primary backups–while Gay and Parker are rehabbing, at the least –are Patty Mills, Ginobili, Kyle Anderson, Davis Bertans and Joffrey Lauvergne.
That is not particularly inspiring. Not by Spurs standards.
But one figure is. As Adam Spinella noted for NBA Math, head coach Gregg Popovich is just one continuous reason for optimism, even as the dynasty looks like it is about the decline:
“In lieu of that certainty, we’ll watch anxiously as Pop tries prove us wrong and also make those subtle changes to his roster. We are going to hope from an unbelievably stable franchise for one final run of basketball. We are going to look to see how this group of offense-first big men and over-the-hill cast members constructs yet another top-ranked defense”
Never bet against Popovich: simply don’t.
